Myself and two other Vets (Richard from Montana and Will from Santa
Rosa) flew into Hanoi on December 5th, 1999. After four days there we took
a 16 hour train to Dong Ha, capitol of Quang,Tri Province. This was
project destination of the Vietnam Veterans Restoration Project
(VVRP)14th team (us), the funding of 5 homes for disabled Vietnam
vets. The days there brought us in contact with many people and
places; we worked, ate, and experienced much in that time. After
completion of the project the team ended up and parted ways in Hue, just
before Christmas. I stayed on, figuring my vacation time starts
now. Two weeks later I returned to San Francisco from Saigon/ Ho
Chiminh City.
This trip proved to be one of the most rewarding and exciting times of
my life; in fact, it seems the second time around was worth the first.
As an artist, I photographed every person, place, and thing as I saw
them to be. I simply attempted to document my time spent
there. I hope you get a feel for the journey, of which it truly
was. I'm still in the process of re-adjusting and I like what I see
so far.
I really thank all those of VVRP for all their effort into making
this trip a reality. I also want to mention my new sculpture and
painting friends at the Hue School of Art - we shall meet again.
Thanks for your warmth, love and talents. I'm inspired!
